Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited President Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace for his regular monthly briefing and informed her about his trip to Turkey and the European elections.

Mr. Mitsotakis expressed his dissatisfaction with the conversion of the Chora Monastery into a mosque, stressing that this is an issue he will raise with the Turkish President when he visits him in Ankara next Monday.

The prime minister explained that the conversion was unnecessary, adding that it was an action that insulted Istanbul's rich history as a crossroads of cultures.  At the same time, he stressed that the channel of communication with Turkey remains open even when we disagree.

Regarding the European elections, Mr. Mitsotakis specifically mentioned "intense polarization from other parties" in light of the June vote. He also stressed that participation in the European elections is necessary, as it will legitimize our country to claim more.

Mitsotakis concluded by saying that we should stay away from the toxic climate, noting that he fears that this wish will not be heeded.

As for the President of the Republic, she concurred that it is imperative to keep lines of communication open with Turkey. She noted that the conversion of the Chora Monastery into a mosque does not send a good message because it is a cultural heritage monument.  Regarding the European elections, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou stressed that mass participation is necessary, stressing that Europe has important challenges to overcome.
