The ruling New Democracy (ND) party is given a 15.4%-point lead over main opposition SYRIZA in the latest poll, whose results were announced on Wednesday during an Athens-based television station’s prime-time newscast. The results are based on respondents’ answers ahead of next month’s June 9 European Parliament election.

An extrapolation of the opinion poll result gives center-right ND close to 32.3% of respondents’ preference, just shy of the threshold of 33% that incumbent Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently cited as being considered a success for his ruling party. Leftist SYRIZA is calculated at 16%, while socialist PASOK is given 14%.

The poll results show an impressive increase for the populist right-wing Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party, as it polls 9.9%. The recently established New Left party, an offshoot of SYRIZA, is also given a surprising 3.8%, a figure that would send one of its candidates to the Europarliament if the result materializes on election day.

According to the survey by the company MRD and its presentation on the Open Channel newscast, ND will win between 30% and 35% of the vote next month, with the latter showing improvement over its performance in the 2019 European Parliament election. SYRIZA is predicted to garner between 14% and 18% of the vote, with its new president, Stefanos Kasselakis, having previously cited a 17% mark as a successful showing. For PASOK, the figures predicted by MRB are 12% to 14%, meaning the minimum foreseen for SYRIZA touches on the maximum performance forecast for PASOK.
