New arrears amounted to €3.43 billion between January and May
May saw a rise in overdue debts to the state, amounting to €3.43 billion, up nearly €500 million from April.

May saw a rise in overdue debts to the state, amounting to €3.43 billion, up nearly €500 million from April.

This amount is in addition to accumulated debts of €107.2 billion until the end of 2023, some of which remain unpaid for decades and are largely uncollectible. 

Indicatively, the actual outstanding balance at the end of 2023 was, according to the AADE, €80.8 billion, with the remainder classified as uncollectible. 

According to AADE data, in May, VAT payments on time reached 83.87%, while the rate of on-time payments for property tax stood at 77.15%. 

Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of debtors shows a 5% decrease (4,253,031 debtors in May 2024 compared to 4,471,762 in 2023).
