Trade deficit up by 10.5% in the first half of the year
The trade deficit in Greece widened by 10.5% in the first half of the year, according to ELSTAT data, despite the fact that imports in June showed a slight increase.

The trade deficit in Greece widened by 10.5% in the first half of the year, according to Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data, despite the fact that imports in June showed a slight increase. 

According to the ELSTAT, the total value of imports in the period January–June 2024 amounted to €42,031.1 million compared to €41,266.7 million (44,464.6 million dollars) in the same period of the year 2023, showing an increase in euros of 1.9%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed an increase of €487.5 million, or 1.6%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships showed an increase of €443.4 million, or 1.5%, compared to the January-June 2023 period.

The total value of exports in the period January–June 2024 amounted to €25,298.0 million (USD 27,429.9 million) compared to €26,123.4 million (USD 28,311.7 million) in the same period of the year 2023, showing a decrease of €3.2%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed a decrease of €793.4 million, i.e., 4.3%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships showed a decrease of €758.4 million, i.e., 4.1%, compared to the January–June 2023 period.

DEFICIT DECREASE

At €2.353 billion compared to €2.610 billion in the corresponding period of 2023, the trade deficit in June 2024 was 2.353 billion euros, recording a decrease of 9.8%.

The corresponding value excluding petroleum products in June 2024 showed an increase in the deficit by €92.8 million, i.e., 4.4%, while the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships in June 2024 showed an increase of €96.9 million, i.e., 4.7% compared to June 2023.

More specifically, with regard to June, the total value of imports in June 2024 amounted to €6,610.3 million (7,091.1 million dollars) compared to €6,779.6 million  (7,326.9 million dollars) in the same month of 2023, showing a decrease of 2.5% in euros. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products in the month of June 2024 showed a decrease of €139.0 million, i.e. 2.6%, while the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships in the month of June 2024 showed a decrease of €159.4 million, i.e. 3.0%, compared to the month of June 2023.

The total value of exports in the month of June 2024 amounted to €4,256.7 million  ($4,593.4 million) compared to €4,168.9 million ($4,532.4 million) in the same month of 2023, showing an increase of 2.1% in euros. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products in the month of June 2024 showed a decrease of €231.8 million, i.e. 7.3%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships in the month of June 2024 showed a decrease of €256.3 million, i.e. 8.1%, compared to the month of June 2023.
