In 2022, total revenues from environmental taxes amounted to €11.578 billion, representing an annual increase of 50.3% compared to 2021, according to data published by ELSTAT.
Revenues from environmental taxes accounted for 13.6% of total taxes and social contributions of the Greek economy, representing an increase of 3.0 percentage points compared to 2021.
Regarding the units paying environmental taxes in the year 2022, the economic activity sectors participated with a total of €8.077 billion and a share of 69.8% of the total environmental tax revenues, while households and non-residents paid EUR 3.5 billion, which accounted for 30.2% of the total environmental taxes.
In 2022, energy taxes amounted to €9,932.0 million, an increase of 59.9% compared to 2021. Energy taxes constituted the majority of environmental taxes, with a share of 85.8% for the year 2022.
The large increase in energy taxes in the reporting year 2022 was mainly due to the introduction and implementation of the "temporary mechanism for the refund of part of the revenue of the next day and intraday market," effective from July 1, 2022, to June 1, 2023.
This new tax concerns the retention of part of the revenues of electricity producers and suppliers and is attributed in its entirety to the economic activity sector "D35: Supply of electricity, gas, and air conditioning.". In the reference year 2022, this tax was €2,889.0 million.
In 2022, the economic activity sectors paid a total of €7,459.0 million in energy taxes, with households and non-residents contributing €2,473.0 million.
