A total of 5,120 foreign affiliated enterprises were active in Greece in 2022 in the sectors of industry, construction, trade and services, according to ELSTAT survey results.

A total of 5,120 foreign affiliated enterprises were active in Greece in 2022 in the sectors of industry, construction, trade and services, according to ELSTAT survey results.

The total turnover of foreign affiliated enterprises amounted to €77.3 billion, while the production value and gross value added of these enterprises amounted to €48.9 billion and €17.1 billion, respectively, the ELSTAT survey showed. 

According to the survey data, foreign affiliated enterprises in the above-mentioned sectors of economic activity spent €64.1 billion on purchases of goods and services in the context of their activity in the year 2022, of which €31.7 billion was related to purchases of goods and services for the purpose of resale in the state in which they were received, without processing.

In the year 2022, the number of persons employed in foreign affiliated enterprises was 252,080 and personnel costs amounted to €8.2 billion. Also, these enterprises made gross investments in tangible goods amounting to €2.4 billion. 

The top five countries (in terms of number of enterprises) where the ultimate controlling institutional units are located are: Cyprus with 44.5% (2 280 enterprises), the United Kingdom with 7.4% (380 enterprises), Germany with 5.5% (282 enterprises), the Netherlands with 5.4% (275 enterprises) and Luxembourg with 5.0% (257 enterprises).

TRADE LEADS THE WAY

The sector with the largest number of enterprises was trade with 1,173 enterprises, or 22.9% of all foreign affiliated enterprises, according to the ELSTAT survey. 

The real estate management sector had 746 enterprises, or 14.6%, and the consolidated sector of mining, quarrying, electricity, water and waste management had 520 enterprises, or 10.2% of all foreign affiliated enterprises.

The trade sector held the largest share—32.1 billion euros, or 41.5%—of the total turnover recorded by foreign affiliated enterprises in 2022.

This was followed by the manufacturing sector and the consolidated mining, quarrying, electricity, water and waste management sectors, with €17.2 billion (22.2%) and €5.7 billion (7.3%), respectively.

The trade sector showed the highest gross value added with EUR 4.0 billion, or 23.3% of the total gross value added of foreign affiliates. Following this came manufacturing and information and communication, with EUR 3.0 billion (17.4%) and EUR 2.4 billion (13.9%), respectively.

Personnel costs of enterprises operating in the trade sector amounted to EUR 2.3 billion, or 28.1% of total personnel costs of foreign affiliates. Enterprises active in manufacturing and information and communication spent EUR 1.6 billion (19.0%) and EUR 1.0 billion (12.6%), respectively.

In terms of the number of persons employed, the trade sector ranked first with 72,270 persons employed, i.e., 28.7% of the total number of persons employed in foreign affiliates. Following this were the manufacturing sector with 41,547 people (16.5%) and the accommodation and food services sector with 30,260 people (12.0%).
