Retail trade turnover increased by 3.4% in the first quarter
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) released data today showing that turnover in the retail sector increased in the first quarter of the year.

Turnover in retail trade increased in the first quarter of the year, according to data announced today by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

In particular, turnover for all businesses in the retail sector amounted to 15.69 billion euros, an increase of 3.4% compared to the first quarter of 2023, when it stood at 15.17 billion euros. Compared to the second quarter of 2023, a decrease of 15.9% (EUR 18.67 billion) was recorded. 

For enterprises in the retail trade sector, excluding motor vehicles, food, and fuel, turnover in the first quarter of 2024 amounted to 5.35 billion euros, an increase of 1.6% compared with the first quarter of 2023, when it stood at 5.27 billion euros, and a decrease of 25.5% compared with the fourth quarter of 2023, when it stood at 7.19 billion euros.

For all businesses in the retail sector, the activities that showed the largest year-on-year increase in turnover were the sale of other motor vehicles (up 29.3%) and the retail sale of second-hand goods in shops (up 26.3%).

The activities that showed the largest decrease in turnover in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter of 2023 were the retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (a decrease of 16.9%) and the retail sale of audio and video equipment in specialised stores (a decrease of 13.8%).
