Greece leads the way on climate change measures
Europe is a global leader in the ecological transition but will need more resources to deal with the consequences of climate change, especially natural disasters, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said today in a speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Climate change must be tackled, and it will not be without cost, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in his speech at the Climate Change Conference in Baku.

"Europe must remain a leader in the global climate transition," he added, clarifying however that this will come at a cost. Adopt an economy that may slow down but will be more environmentally friendly, he said. He noted that Europe needs to change its regulations and become more flexible. Each state should choose its own path, aim to reduce emissions and adopt new technologies, he said.

"Greece is a pioneer in terms of climate change measures and has achieved a 45% reduction in its emissions," he noted.

In his interventions, both at the conference and earlier at the opening of the Greek pavilion, as well as in an interview with Bloomberg, Mitstotakis insisted on the need to accelerate the processes for energy transition and on the support that the European Union should provide to countries facing climate disasters.

"We should focus on long-term mitigation and help the people facing climate disasters," he said. "So for that, funding is needed. So we are not only going to help poor countries to cope with the transformation but also more mature economies to cope with the consequences," he noted. He also stressed the need to speed up the processes for energy transition. He also expressed the need to accelerate the transition process.
