Greece is participating with a national pavilion at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. The Ministry of Environment and Energy is responsible for the preparation of the Greek presence.

According to the relevant announcement of the Ministry of Environment, Greece will be represented at the highest level, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis heading the National Delegation, who will have a series of meetings and participate in high-level panels.

Theo Skylakakis, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Lina Mendoni, the Minister of Culture, Kostas Fragogogiannis, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexandra Sdoukou, and the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Stefanos Gikas, will accompany the Prime Minister.

The Secretary General of Energy and Fossil Resources, Aristotle Aivaliotis, the Secretary General of Natural Environment and Water, Petros Varelidis, and the Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination, Manolis Grafakos, will also be present at COP29 from the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the Conference has gained particular importance over the last decade, being the main coordination forum for climate crisis mitigation efforts. This is because the effects of the latter are increasing worldwide and are becoming more noticeable due to their increased intensity - typical examples are the devastating "Daniel" that hit Thessaly, but also the recent, sweeping bad weather in Valencia - making it imperative to take action.

In relation to the main objectives of the Conference - as highlighted by the preliminary talks - are to find resources to finance efforts to mitigate the climate crisis, to further push for the reduction of fossil fuels and to focus on innovative ideas and solutions.

It was announced that more than 45 events are planned at the Greek pavilion at COP29, with the participation of heads of state, ministers and government officials from dozens of countries, as well as academics, representatives of companies and civil society.

Discussions will focus on coordinated climate action, energy transition and enhancing energy security.
