Brazilian state-owned oil and gas giant Petrobras is seeking to charter a series of new Suezmax (DP2) tankers. The oil major announced a charter tender for four vessels with a capacity of 158,000 dwt several weeks ago, which has attracted interest from major tanker companies and shipyards. Norway's Knutsen, Greece's Maran Tankers Management and Tsakos Group, MISC's shipping arm, AET, and JP Morgan are among the shipping companies bidding for the contracts.

Knutsen is the number one player in the market, but Maran shot up to second place last week with its acquisition of Altera Shuttle Tankers. Sources said Petrobras is seeking to charter the quartet long-term for 15 years. At least five shipyards are believed to be working with the owners on the new buildings. Brokers estimate that the 158,000 dwt conventional marine fuel tankers will cost at least $130 million per ship if ordered in China. The price in South Korea would be much higher; for example, in March, Chakos ordered a new DP2 to Samsung for $149 million for immediate delivery.
