Pressure is coming out on the Athens Stock Exchange today, with sellers leading for the first time after five consecutive sessions.

Concerns in Europe about possible tariffs from the new US administration, combined with persistent banking pressures, are preventing the Greek market from continuing its "quiet" upward streak.

Somehow, Athens again sees the 1,400 points in imminent danger, confirming the picture of prolonged volatility seen throughout the last several weeks.

Specifically, in the 3rd session of the week, the General Index is down mildly by 0.64% to 1,398.97 points, losing nine points compared to Tuesday's close (1,408.05 points).

The arc of daily fluctuations extends to 15 points (from 1,396.60 to 1,411.56 points), with the turnover of transactions ranging at just 33 million euros, of which 5.5 million euros are pre-agreed packages.

The banking index is at the centre of the liquidation, as it retreats sharply to -2.15% and 1,166 points, widening by more than -12% the distance from this year's highs (1,354 points).

NBG shares retract to -2.98% and 6.782 euros, Eurobank's shares narrow to -1.41% and 2.029 euros, Alpha's shares fall to -1.62% and 1.4905 euros, while Piraeus' shares shrink to -2.58% and 3.506 euros.

In the high-cap index (+0.92% and 3,377 points), the shares of OPAP and OTE retreat by at least 1.2%, while the share of Ellaktor, which had "pulled out" an upward reaction in the previous period, is also under considerable pressure. Beyond that, the shares of Metlen-Lamda Development show a fall of more than 1%. On the contrary, the share of Coca-Cola strengthens by 1% and recovers 34 euros.

As for the mid-cap index (-0.70% and 2,245 points), Intralot shares stand out negatively at -1.9% and 0.911 euros, failing to continue the recovery effort of the previous days. The shares of Ideal, Intrakat, AVAX, and Technical Olympics also show losses of 1.5% to 2%. At the same time, shares of EYATH, ADMIE, and Lavipharm are losing 1%. PPA shares, after consecutive multi-year highs, retrace -0.7% and 31 euros.

Overall on the stock exchange board, 29 stocks move up, 60 stocks decline, and 11 stocks remain unchanged. The market capitalisation stands at EUR 98.4 billion.
