The green projects of PPC Renewables are progressing rapidly, and the company anticipates the delivery of additional projects in the upcoming period. As the company's CEO, Konstantinos Mavros, stressed, speaking at the 4th OT Forum, "in 24 months we will have large deliveries," while recalling that from 150 MW of RES production in 2019, it has now reached 2.5 GW, including the Romanian projects.
LOOKING FOR INVESTMENTS
Mavros noted that the company is running renewable energy projects in other Balkan regions besides Greece and Romania and said that the markets of Romania, Bulgaria, Italy and Croatia are of investment interest.
STORAGE
Asked about the company's plans in the field of green energy storage, Mavros noted that the company's focus is on lithium batteries, where it already has 1 MW in projects, pumped storage, such as the project in Ikaria, and flexible generation. He stressed the need for subsidised tenders for projects such as lithium batteries.
LIGNITE PLANT
The Meliti lignite production unit received a three-month cold standby extension to safeguard the electricity system. The unit, which was due to retire at the end of 2024, will continue to operate until the end of March, following a decision by IPTO, due to the increased energy needs of the winter season and limited reserves at the hydroelectric plants. The Meliti plant represents, based on 2024 data, 0.84% of the country's total power generation. Specifically, out of 19,050 gigawatt-hours of total production, the Meliti unit produced 106 gigawatt-hours while also recording increased production costs, amounting to €130-€150/gigawatt-hour.
NEXT UNITS TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS
According to the plan, the next units to be retired are units 3, 4 and 5 of Agios Dimitrios NPP at the end of next year, while in 2026 Ptolemaida 5 will be closed as a lignite-fired generation unit, as it is expected to be converted into a gas-fired unit afterwards.
