Trade deficit increased by 7.9% in 2024
The country's trade deficit increased by 7.9% in 2024, following a 9% decline in December last year.

The country's trade deficit increased by 7.9% in 2024, following a 9% decline in December last year.

According to the data of the Hellenic Statistical Authority, the total value of imports in December 2024 amounted to 7,126.2 million euros (7,444.8 million dollars) compared to 7,140.1 million euros (7,761.8 million dollars) in the same month of 2023, showing a decrease of 0.2% in euros. The corresponding value excluding oil products in the month of December 2024 showed an increase of EUR 19.7 million, i.e., 0.4%, while the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships in the month of December 2024 showed an increase of EUR 54.9 million, i.e., 1.0%, compared to the month of December 2023.

The total value of exports in the month of December 2024 amounted to 4,031.5 million euros ($4,237.0 million) compared to 3,739.1 million euros ($4,089.1 million) in the same month of the year 2023, showing an increase, in euros, of 7.8%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products in the month of December 2024 showed an increase of EUR 418.4 million, i.e., 16.2%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships in the month of December 2024 demonstrated an increase of EUR 413.7 million, i.e., 16.0%, compared to the month of December 2023.

The trade deficit in the month of December 2024 amounted to EUR 3,094.7 million (USD 3,207.8 million) compared to EUR 3,401.0 million (USD 3,672.7 million) in the same month of the year 2023, showing a decrease, in euro terms, of 9.0%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products in the month of December 2024 showed a decrease in the deficit of EUR 398.7 million, or 13.9%, while the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships in the month of December 2024 showed a decrease of EUR 358.8 million, or 12.8%, compared to the month of December 2023.

TOTAL VALUE OF IMPORTS

The total value of imports in the period January-December 2024 amounted to 84,517.1 million euros (91,141.8 million dollars) compared to 83,088.3 million euros (89,570.5 million dollars) in the same period of the year 2023, showing an increase, in euros, of 1.7%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed an increase of EUR 2,240.7 million, i.e., 3.6%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships showed an increase of EUR 2,232.4 million, i.e., 3.6%, compared to the period January-December 2023.

The total value of exports in the period January-December 2024 amounted to 49,902.2 million euros (54,143.4 million dollars) compared to 51,017.4 million euros (55,317.7 million dollars) in the same period of the year 2023, showing a decrease, in euros, of 2.2%. The corresponding value excluding petroleum products showed an increase of EUR 819.8 million, i.e., 2.3%, and the corresponding value excluding petroleum products and ships demonstrated an increase of EUR 839.0 million, i.e., 2.4%, compared to the January-December 2023 period.

The trade deficit in the period January-December 2024 amounted to 34,614.9 million euros (36,998.4 million dollars) compared to 32,070.9 million euros (34,252.8 million dollars) in the same period of the year 2023, showing an increase, in euros, of 7.9%. The corresponding figure excluding oil products showed an increase of EUR 1,420.9 million, i.e., 5.4%, and the corresponding figure excluding oil products and ships demonstrated an increase of EUR 1,393.4 million, i.e., 5.3%.
